Title: Negated Polarity Questions as Denegations of Assertions

Abstract:
Questions like Isn’t there a vegetarian restaurant around here? have a reading in which the negation is not interpreted as part of the propositional content of the question, but as a marker of a biased question. In this talk, I will argue that negation scopes over a speech act, and provide a formal account for that. The question turns out as a request to denegate the assertion of the proposition ‘there is a vegetarian restaurant around here’.
