We are happy to announce that on Thursday, February 21, Manfred Krifka (Humboldt University, Berlin) will give a LUSH talk in Utrecht entitled Negated Polarity Questions as Denegations of Assertions. We hope to see you all there!

Date: Thursday, February 21, 2013

Time: 15:00 – 17:00

Location: Utrecht, Janskerkhof 13, room 0.06 (Stijlkamer)

Speaker: Manfred Krifka

Title: Negated Polarity Questions as Denegations of Assertions

Questions like Isn’t there a vegetarian restaurant around here? have a reading in which the negation is not interpreted as part of the propositional content of the question, but as a marker of a biased question. In this talk, I will argue that negation scopes over a speech act, and provide a formal account for that. The question turns out as a request to denegate the assertion of the proposition ‘there is a vegetarian restaurant around here’.
